OK I have seen this at a couple of fields so I thought I would post on some when you get hit etiquette. First, if hit don't throw your hands up and yell hit! Once you do that your out whether it breaks or not. Drop low take a look if it broke call yourself out.  If not  yell no break and play on. Second if your not sure call for a paint check. But stay hidden until you’re checked. If you’re hit before the Ref see's you your out. Third If your hit and you know it and play on expect to get bonus balled and don't complain when you do! Always play with honor....Feyd..........

At Ambush Alpha, we call for a "paint check" right away either using a team mate or ref.  If either one is not available, we will call ourselves out. It is the most honorable way to play.  I know that the "tourny" guys are trained to play on until a ref calls you out but they have more referees per sq foot and per person than Woodsball/Scenario.  Re-insertions happen quickly enough.  Gives you time to think about whats next and to "re-supply" if needed.

Great Topic Dorian, I'm going to "pin" this one.

I love it when you call yourself out, put the barrel sock on your gun, hold your gun in the air, start walking out and the guy that originally shot you keeps on shooting you.

Call me crazy, but I love getting shot in the face mask.  No questions you are hit and out.

Yes I agree with you guys totally but I think I was aiming this at the new guy or rec guy. I see them take a bounce and call them self hit, and it’s too late. I just want them to know they can take a second to check if they are not sure. Or call a ref for a paint check. Also some new players think it's OK to wipe because they saw it on TV! I'm sure this should clear up some misconceptions about the sport. And yes we should address over shooting a player that’s called himself out. Lots of experience on this site and I'm sure new players read this but maybe not post.

Problem some of the newer players have is that they'll just raise their gun, but stay hidden, so you have no clue whether or not they are either reloading, or actually out. The fear of being shot keeps them hidden, and almost ironically, they attract more shots to themselves because of it.

Also, when you are shot, you should walk AWAY from the action, not thru the middle of it.

As for calling yourself out, I believe in having a teammate check, or a ref. I've been hit in spots I can't check myself for bounce/break, like on my back, etc.

If Im hit, I always drop, find cover and check, if theres no break, I keep playing, if theres a break, yell hit, put my hand up, then about 10 seconds later book it out of there. However, if I get hit like 20 times and they all bounce (GOD I hate Combat68) I usually call myself out

LOL. Paintballs end up in odd places.
Got your back against a palette and your reloading, they can go thru slots on the palette...
My experience is you can get hit in some of the oddest places, especially if its not completely solid cover.

You can get hit in the back laying down.

Wearing a vest can also prove problematic. First of all it's hard to feel a hit and second, 50% of the time they bouce off. Unfortunately I've been in the habit of calling myself out sometimes when I don't need to because there are no refs around.

Don't forget Ghillie Suits.  Most of the fields I've played at have a hard/fast Ghillie Rule.  If you think it's hard to tell you've ben hit wearing a vest, try it with a Ghillie on.  The rules I've always stuck by if you are wearing a Ghilie Suit is if you are hit, or even suspect it, you call yourself out.  Checking for a break is almost impossible in a Ghillie, and 9 times out of 10 you won't get a break as a result of the nature of a full Ghillie.  If you are wearing a Ghillie and suspect a hit, call yourself out.  It's the fairest way for both you and the OpFor.

When I play with my friends we only count actual breaks.  To make the game last longer, we only count hits that are waste up and shoulders in.

To the players that are new to scenario.

A good rule of thumb when playing in a scenario with elite or skilled teams, is to call yourself out once your hit and raise your hand right away. The competition and energy level is high during scenario and you could get lit up if you dont call yourself out right away. A player may have been playing honorably by tagging you with one or two balls, but if you decide to play on and check yourself later. I can tell you right now, there will be another 20 balls flying at you a few seconds later. A player that hit you will not take the chance of waiting for you to fire back at him and take him out while you check for paint. Cheating is not tolerated and honor is expected in the rings we travel. If you decide not to play honorably, you will find yourself heavily bonus balled.

If I get tagged with a solid hit, I will call myself out immediatly without checking. The player that hit you deserves the kill. After all he hit you dead on and thats honorable to give him the respect by acknowledging the hit even if it didnt break. Again, if you decide to wait and check later, dont complain when you get lit up seconds later. You took the risk. If your in a bunker and it was a glancing hit, then I will call for paint check by a team mate or ref.

Rephy I agree with you and again I was aiming this thread at the new player who call's out to quickly. Knowing the rules helps and if it doesn’t break your not out. And long balls especially! I went to a game where a very popular local team Captain was turning his hopper sideways because hopper hits didn’t count. Thats not cheating but I would say he was stretching the rules. You play the rules of the field your at. Always play with honor, if I'm 10 feet away from someone who drills me of course I throw my hand up right away. But if I feel a light bump from a long ball I'm checking, no break I'm playing on. One of my favorite things to do is to try and catch long shots. I've had them bounce right out of my hand and on a bet I caught one and shot it back and a guy (but missed). We have a local castle game where its 150' to the front easy so we try to divert attention to us so a fire team can flank. But at that distance it's like playing catch. Again I think I'm just trying to get new players to think.

I agree if your just playing a rec game, then train yourself to check before calling yourself out. I was just taking it a step further. If those rec players would like to try a scenario, it is important to be able to make the transition from rec to scenario.

OK, very cool you get what I was trying to get across. The guys I play with and I have invited team members to leave for good, for wiping. And one hurt the team badly because he was a very good player. That was 1995 tourney ball. When you put money on the line people do all kinds of shady things. (And trust me it wasn’t much money). But when someone gets caught wiping or argues with Ref's it tends to give you a bad image. So we as a team decided to play like it was the 80"s again. And we had allot more fun. But back to Rec ball! Know the rules of the field your at and always play with honor.

By the way I hate the term Noobs (LOL) I was the biggest NOOB in 1985ish. I used to ask the dumbest questions! Thank God Ed D. was a great guy!

Great post D, We have the same view on our team. If you feel the impact, drop low or duck and cover and check for breakage. Usually scenario rules are anything bigger than a quarter and you are out. Also feel free to ask a ref or a team mate for those hard to see spots.
We are always willing to teach new players the best way to call out and to use the honor system.

thats how i feel when i play if it's a good hit and i know it is i'll call myself out. i remember a game last summer were i had just walked out from behind a big ass tree and i just seen the glare on his mask like 50 feet away in a dam bush i almost got my gun up when Boom Boom Boom, three shots hit my belly within the size of a coffe cup. frist thing i did was put one hand on it hit's and the other up and called myself out, lol and i looked down none of them broke and there was 3 combat68's on the dam ground (lol they shoot nice but they dont break all the time)
